When you look up a .gy name, you may see two kinds of websites: the .gy Registry and registrars such as Register.gy. They do different jobs. Knowing which is which helps you choose where to register, what to pay, and how to check that a company is accredited before you hand over your money.
The .gy Registry keeps the list
The .gy Registry is run by the University of Guyana. It keeps the official database of every .gy name: who holds it, which registrar manages it, its nameservers and its expiry date. It also runs the public WHOIS, where anyone can look up a .gy domain.
Accredited registrars sell and manage names
To register a name you go through an accredited registrar: a company the registry has authorised to register .gy domains for the public. The registrar takes your details and payment, registers the name in the registry, and looks after it for you afterwards (renewals, nameservers, DNS, transfer codes and support).

Same name, same registry, same rights
- One registry: whichever accredited registrar you use, your name is registered in the same .gy Registry database.
- Same rights: you are the registrant (the holder) of the name. The rules for using, renewing and transferring it are the registry’s rules, not the registrar’s.
- Different prices and service: each registrar sets its own price, payment methods, speed and tools. Compare these, not the name itself.

How to check that a registrar is accredited
Any website can show a list of featured or “trusted” registrars. That list is the website’s own choice. The reliable test is the registry’s own public WHOIS: every registered .gy domain shows the registrar that manages it. Can I buy a .gy domain directly from the .gy Registry?
Registrations are made through accredited registrars, even when you start your search on the registry’s website. The registry keeps the database and the public WHOIS; the registrar registers the name for you and manages it afterwards.
Is a domain from one accredited registrar different from another?
No. The name is registered in the same .gy Registry with the same rights. What differs is the price, the renewal price, the payment options, the speed and the tools and support you get.
How do I know a registrar is accredited?
Look up a domain it has registered in the .gy Registry’s public WHOIS and read the Registrar field. Domains registered with Register.gy show IIS Inc.
Can I change registrar later?
Yes. Ask your current registrar for the transfer code and start a transfer at the new registrar. The name stays yours throughout.
Who owns my .gy domain?
You do, as the registrant, for as long as you keep it renewed. The registrar manages it on your behalf.
